Behind the making of a film, a clothing commercial, a series or a video clip, there is a varied team of professionals taking care of every detail. On audiovisual projects, the costume that the characters wear is an essential part of the visual communication and the coherence with the storyline and its context.
The job of the costume designer or stylist is to read, analyse and interpret the script being used and to research the literary work and the roles in detail.
After the research stage, the costume director proposes ideas for each role to the director of the film in the form of pictures, drawings and sometimes even samples of fabric. After the aesthetics of each role have been decided, an investigation is made of costumes in shops, showrooms and rental houses and with designers and dressmakers.
For the production stage, the costume director is allocated a budget that is used for making the garments or renting them or buying the materials that they cannot make. He or she organises costume fittings with the members of the cast and makes alterations when necessary.
The stylist works closely with directors, producers, technicians and lighting technicians, and with actors. This ensures that the aesthetics of the film are coherent across all departments.
The aim of this Continuing Study Course in Styling for Films and Audiovisual Productions is to follow step by step everything a costume director or stylist can encounter when working on a film, commercial or television production and how to deal with it.
The course offers an immersion in all the important moments in which the costume director is involved during shooting, from the research stage, defining the ideas with the director, drawing up a budget, preparing the data sheet, selecting the sizes, organising the costuming team, controlling continuity and monitoring the shooting.
It gives an overview of everything related with the costume department and how it is linked to the other people involved in the shooting.
By taking part in this course, the coordinators and teachers want to provide all their knowledge and experience so that the students will know how to tackle a specific project and how to be perfectly ready to start working with the design team of a film and enter the marvellous but complicated world of cinema.
The course is organised into eight modules that summarise all the stages described about what a costume director needs.
The classes are practical as they explain the specific application to each of the stages. They are combined with lectures on the technical and artistic areas that are related to costume design (photography and costume management, art and costume management, make-up, hairdressing and costuming, actors and costuming, and continuity).
As the final project, the script of a short film is broken down into its costuming and a reference file or costume moodboard is created for all the roles.
– Students or professionals from the world of fashion who wish to expand their professional activities into film and/or audiovisual productions.
– Film or audiovisual production students or professionals who wish to specialise in costume design.
– All those who wish to look in depth at costuming for films, series, video clips and television.
Applicants are required to submit a CV and a covering letter in order to register. Should any of the prerequisites for admission not be met, the school will evaluate each case individually, and reserves the right to call in the applicant for a personal interview.
At the end of the project, the students will be able to:
– Be part of a costume design team.
– Work in films, advertising and/or television as a costuming stylist.

The educational planning for all IED Master courses is aligned with the criteria established by the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). The IED Master program has adopted a credit structure that follows the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The IED Master is a private degree.
